Research -> GWMail Email Transfer, Netscape 4.7x for Windows®

This document walks you through transferring your Research mail to the GWMail system. The basic idea is to:
  1. Connect to GWMail via IMAP with Netscape (skip if you have already done so)
  2. Connect to Research via IMAP
  3. Create empty folders on GWMail to transfer Research Mail to
  4. Drag and Drop Messages from Research to GWMail
Note: In Netscape 4.7x you cannot add accounts if your are using POP to check your mail. You can only have multiple IMAP accounts, but not multiple POP or a combination of POP and IMAP accounts.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

You will need:

1. Connecting to Research

1.1. Click on Edit > Preferences. Then expand (if not already expanded) Mail & Newsgroups. Click on Mail Servers (in the left column) and then click on Add... (top right)

1.2. In Server Name type research.circ.gwu.edu. Then type your research User Name. Here, I am using ithelp, which is my User Name on Research.

1.3. Next click on the IMAP Tab and check the items shown:

1.4. Now, under the Advanced tab, check the items shown:

1.5. Click OK to confirm the Mail Server Info and then click OK to confirm your new Preferences

1.6. To get your mail, click on Communicator in the Netscape pull down menu and select Messenger. You will be asked for your Research and GWMail passwords.


2. Transferring Research Mail to GWMail

2.1. Now we are going to move your messages from research to GWMail. The first step is to create a folder for your Research messages on GWMail (You will need do so for each folder you want to move over). Create the folder by first right clicking on imap.gwu.edu and selecting New Folder.

2.2. Type a folder name, then click OK. Be sure that you create this as a sub folder of imap.gwu.edu.

2.3. Then click on the folder under research.circ.gwu.edu that you want to move over to GWMail. The messages in this folder will appear on the right.

2.4. Click on any one of the messages in the folder. Then, go to Edit and click Select, then click All Messages

2.5. The messages will all be highlighted. Drag them over to the folder you created under imap.gwu.edu, and drop.

2.6. Click on the folder you created under imap.gwu.edu to verify the move. Repeat 2.1 -> 2.5 for each folder you need to copy over.
