IMAP Mail with Outlook Express 5.0x for Windows

IMAP, "Internet Mail Application Protocol", allows you to read your mail from multiple computers without transferring any files or messages. Getting your email via IMAP is especially handy when you use several computers or if you travel a lot. Let us begin...

1. Start Outlook Express the way you normally do.

2.Click on the Tools, then Accounts, to open the Accounts window. Tools -> Accounts

3. From the Accounts window, click on Add, then Mail...

4.This launches the Internet Connection Wizard.

Type your name into the Display name field.

Click Next.
Your Name

5. Now, supply your email address at GW. Your email address is of the format: username@gwu.edu. My username is ithelp, therefore, my email address is ithelp@gwu.edu.

Click Next.
Email Address

6. Now, you will enter the Email Server Names and type.

• The mail server type is IMAP

• Incoming Mail server is: imap.gwu.edu

*Outgoing Mail server is: smtp.gwu.edu

*This applies only to on campus users. Off campus users must contact their internet service providers for this information.

7. Now, enter your email account name. This it the part of your email address before the @ symbol. This is also your userid/username.

Click Next.

8. Click Finish. Mail Server Info

9. Click Close. Mail Server Info

10. Next, you'll be asked if you'd to download folders from the mail server that you just added. Click Yes if you want to see your mail folders on the server. Should you choose to say No for now, you can always go back to Outlook Express, click on Tools and then IMAP Folders... to download your mail folders.

This does not apply to you POP mail folders which are on the computer you created them on.

Once done with downloading folders, in Outlook Express, click on Send/Recv to get your mail.

You will be prompted to enter your email password.

Click OK to receive your mail.
