Welcome to the GW1X connectivity support page. Here you will find information on how to register for the GW1X program. You will also find information, in the form of answers to frequently asked questions, on how to configure your device for connectivity and how to establish and maintain a connection. Please note that while we currently have over 1900 GW community members enrolled in GW1X this is still a pre-production offering and the service may infrequently become unavailable while we refine server settings to best meet the needs of the GW community.
GW1X is a wireless network that uses an authentication method that a variety of mobile devices work with. This means that Apple Mobile devices, such as the iPad, can connect to the Internet using a secure wireless link on campus. Macbook
Mac OS 10.5.x (Leopard) (If pages do not load allow popups on this site.) iPhone/iPad/iTouch devices Alternatively, please follow the instructions below. 1. Power on the iPhone / iPad / iTouch device. From wireless settings (settings-->wireless&networks-->Wi-Fi Settings)
Select GW1X from the list of available networks. It will say: GW1X Secured with 802.1x EAP You will then be presented with a menu 'Connect to GW1X' Use these settings: • EAP Method: TTLS • Phase 2 authentication: PAP • CA Certificate: (leave as N/A) • Client Certificate: (leave as N/A) • Identity: <GW NetID> • Anonymous identity: (leave blank) •Wireless password: <NetID password> Return to ^Top^
4. When I connect to GW1X and enter my username and password it keeps giving me an incorrect username or password message, even though I know I’m typing it right!
For incorrect password issues, try removing the profile and reinstalling it. You can remove the profile by going into Settings -> General -> Profile and pressing remove. Try typing in another web address into the address bar, like
http://www.gwu.edu
to try to get the browser to reload the page. When the page reloads, try clicking on the link. If the GWireless splash page has a blue background, you should be able to install the profile.
Return to ^Top^ At this time the Law School access points are not broadcasting GW1X. You should be able to access the signal in other areas of campus.
Return to ^Top^ No, GW1X is a wireless network only available at GW. For off campus access, please use the VPN by going to http://vpn.gwu.edu.

8. I have a second generation iPod Touch and although my device picks up GW1X when I get on campus, it will often lose the connection throughout the day.
The iPod Touch shuts down the wireless connection whenever it goes to sleep to conserve battery. With the GW1X network, the added layer of security means that it takes longer to bring the network back-up.
If you go into the WiFi settings, and select GWireless and GW_Event by clicking the blue arrows; tell the device to "Forget this network" so that when you are on campus, the only option is for GW1X. When your device comes back up from sleep it will continually try to connect to GW1X. Return to ^Top^ Our testing has shown that the iPad WiFi radio application can go to sleep and require users to reauthenticate. If this happens to you simply reauthenticate to GW1X and your wireless session will be restored.
Return to ^Top^ You should check the software version number your Android is currently running. Unfortunately, the Android Operating System Release 2.2 (also know as FroYo) update appears to have introduced a bug that breaks 802.1X support for many users. It appears that users are automatically prompted to upgrade their OS to this version. Once they do, they can not revert to the previous version and are unable to establish a GW1X connection. In fact, any customer who has an Android and who has upgraded to the latest Android Operating System Release 2.2 (also know as FroYo) will not be able to connect to any WiFi connection requiring authentication, including connecting to GW1X. For more information and updates on this issue, as well as to track Google's status on repairing this known bug, please refer to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=10170
Return to ^Top^ We have not yet been able to get any test RIM Blackberry devices working securely on the GW Network. Blackberries can only support some forms 802.1x and not others. Unfortunately RIM does not currently support the authentication type used by the GW1X system. Division of IT Staff continue to work with our support partners to bring a viable option secure option to Blackberry users.
Return to ^Top^ GW1X is available from Wireless Access Points (WAPS) across the Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon, and Virginia Campuses. If you see GW1X listed as a wireless connection option from your current location then you are in range of a GW Wireless Access point capable of connecting you to the GW1X network.
