3. How do I create my own web page at GW?
You need to make HTML files. There are many ways of doing this.

Most word processing packages will let you save files in HTML format. There are numerous web authoring tools available. Here is a list of a few.

4. What is the web address (URL) of my web site?
It is http://home.gwu.edu/~username. My username is ithelp, so my website is at http://home.gwu.edu/~ithelp/.

NOTE: http://acad.gwu.edu/~username will not work.

5. Who can help me with my site?
The Help Desk can help your troubleshoot problems only! There are numerous HTML (free) resources on the internet, and some are listed on our IT Links page. If this is for a class, we recommend you talk to your professor and/or TA for specific HTML help.

6. How do I publish my web site?
Most web page development utilities will have a publishing feature. You can either publish or upload your files to your public_html directory that you created. For detailed instructions, check out our Online Manuals on Web Pages. We recommend that you do not use Microsoft Front Page to publish to your web page as it does not work well with our system.

Here is a publishing example using Netscape's Composer, and here is where you can read on files transfers.

7. How do I use CGI scripts on my web site?
CGI access is not available Acad (personal web sites for students, staff and faculty). However, if you have a web site on the WWW server (GW Departments, Programs, Student Organizations, etc...), you may contact Interactive Multimedia Applications Group at (202) 994-0917, imag@gwu.edu, http://www.gwu.edu/~imag/ to request CGI access for your account(s).

8. I transferred my files to my account via FTP, but still cannot see my web page.
If your web pages does not show up after transferring your files, check the following:
  1. Your file permissions. If your file permissions are set incorrectly, you will be unable to see your files. To fix this, go back to your Acad account and type fix_html at the UNIX prompt.
  2. If you still do not see your files, make sure that when you published or transferred files to your Acad account, you placed them in the folder called public_html.
  3. If this does not help, call the Help Desk at (202) 994-5530, option 2, and we'll be more than glad to assist you.

9. I am having a hard time publishing my web page.
If you are having a hard time publishing your web site, you might want to go through this checklist:
  1. Make sure you have a directory called public_html created on your UNIX account
  2. Make sure you are using the proper username and password
  3. When you FTP files over, make sure you FTP them to your UNIX account's public_html directory
  4. Always make a file called index.html and place this in your public_html directory on your Acad UNIX account. Visitors to your site will see this file first. Otherwise, they'll see a page which will say "Directory Listing..." and an unpleasant listing of files and folders.
  5. Check your file permissions
  6. Spell check your work and note that the file names are case sensitive. You cannot use spaces in your file names. This may be the difference between broken and good links.
  7. If nothing else works, refer back to the Web Pages section of the Online Manuals just in case you missed something
