RELATED INFO

This document will show you how to create "filtering rules" in Netscape Messenger. This will allow Netscape Messenger to automatically sort certain types of e-mail by the categories you proscribe (send into folders, delete, etc..). This method is a very useful tool to help you sort your new or existing mail.

Launch Netscape Messenger and on the menu bar select "Edit", "Message Filters".

Choose the folder you would like to set a filter for and click "New" to create a new message filter.

Type in a name for the filter you are creating.

Choose whether to match all of the following filters, or just some of them

Choose the criteria to search your messages by; e.g. if you want to filter all messages from "John Doe"

For example...

If you would like to set more than one filtering preference; click on more, and you will get another line of preferences.

You must then decide what you are to do with the filtered messages; your options are listed on the right.

In filtering messages, you may choose a folder to move the message to, or create a new folder

You may choose to create a new folder as part of local mail or server-side mail (in order to create server-side folders, or filter to them you must set your preferences to IMAP; see http://helpdesk.gwu.edu for more help).

Congratulations, you have now created a new Message Filter. Click OK.

You may create more message filters by clicking "New" or edit/delete them by selecting the filter and clicking the appropriate tab. Click OK when done to return to the Netscape Messenger home window.
