In your browser address bar enter the following address and hit the enter key or click the 'Go' button.

http://helpdesk.gwu.edu//software/download.html

The file you want to download is under the "File Transfers (SFTP/SSH)" row and click the "SSH 3.2.9" link to start the download.

Once the file is finished downloading double-click the file's icon to start the install process. Click your way through the install process leaving all of the settings at their default. Once you are finished you will see the following two icons on your desktop.

Double click the SFTP client to bring up the following window. As you can see, it has a similar interface to Windows Explorer but much of it is greyed out as you are not currently connected to any SSH server. Click the 'Quick Connect' button in the bottom left of the toolbar.

The following dialog should pop up prompting you to supply some information for the connection you are trying to connect. For the host name you will need to supply the full domain name, such as acad.gwu.edu or others. For user name supply the login for your account on the target system. Click the 'Connect' button.

Enter your password in the next dialog box. Click the 'Ok' button.

Once the server authenticates your login the application will no longer be greyed out. You will see that the display is like the Windows Explorer, with a tree structure to the left and the contents of the current folder to the right. Files can be dragged to and from this right pane from your Windows environment to upload to and download from the server you are connected to. Unlike FTP you do not need to worry about setting the file type - SSH discovers this automatically. (Note that GW has replaced FTP access with the secure SFTP protocol.)

As always, further help is available from the 'Help' menu option.
