BEFORE YOU BEGIN

You must...
Pine is a UNIX based, efficient text email program running on Acad. Pine is a trademark of the University of Washington.

1. Getting to Pine

To access Pine, first login into your Acad account via SSH.

After you have logged into your Acad account: type pine at the UNIX prompt and hit enter/return. You will then be asked to login again with your GWMail username and password.

Once you are in Pine, the available commands are given on the bottom of the screen. The only computer jargon that you will have to remember is that the ^ character stands for the control key (labeled Ctrl on some keyboards).

Once in Pine, you can type the ? at any time to get help.
2. The Main Menu

The Main Menu lists Pine's main options. The key or keys you must type to enter your choice is to the left of each option or command name.

From the Main Menu you can choose to read online help, write (compose) and send a message, look at an index of your mail messages, open or maintain your mail folders, update your address book, configure or update Pine, and quit Pine. There are additional options listed at the bottom of the screen as well.

3. Composing and Sending a Message

After you type C at the Main Menu, you will be presented with a screen that looks like this:

Compose Message

At the To: prompt, type in the email address of the addressee and press enter.

At the Cc: prompt, you may type in the email addresses for carbon copies (Cc), if any and press enter.

At the Attchmnt: prompt, provide the path to your attachment file if any.

At the Subject: prompt, type in the subject of your mail

In the -- Message Text -- area type your message. You can use arrow keys and the backspace/delete key to edit your message. Other commands at the bottom of the screen are available to move around on the screen and edit your text.

To send a message type Ctrl-X.

4. Reading Your Mail

All messages sent to you are stored in your INBOX.

To read your mail, type I at the Main Menu to view the INBOX. You will see a screen that looks something like this:
Message Index

Pressing V or enter, on a high-lighted message, displays it. Use the up and down arrow keys to move from one message to another. Other commands are listed at the bottom of the screen. Pressing the ? key always provides context sensitive help.

The characters in the left column indicate the status of a message. It may contain:
  • "N" if the message is new (unread).
  • "A" if you have answered the message (using the Reply command).
  • "D" if you have marked the message for deletion. [Note: If you answer a message as well as mark it deleted (in either order), you only see the "D".]
  • If blank, the message has been read.

5. Deleting Mail

To delete mail, move the cursor to highlight the message and type D. This will mark the message for deletion. Messages marked for deletion will automatically be expunged when exiting Pine.

It is important to save and delete your mail to save system disk space. All e-mail coming into Acad shares common disk space (the INBOX). This shared disk space can quickly become full if messages are not saved or deleted. In order to help alleviate this situation, all read messages will be automatically moved into a folder named read-mail unless you delete them or move them into another folder.

6. Saving Mail in Folders

A folder is a collection of one or more messages that are stored (just like the messages in your INBOX) so that you can access and manage them. To save mail, move the cursor to highlight a message and type S. When you do this, you will be prompted to give a folder name. If you do not provide a name, the message will be saved in a folder called saved-messages. If the folder you named doesn't yet exist, Pine will create it for you.

7. Accessing Folders

From the Main Menu, select L to list all of your folders. You may create your own folders, but Pine automatically provides three: the INBOX folder, the saved-messages folder, and the sent-mail folder. Pine will also create a fourth folder called read-mail and will move into it any read mail from your INBOX that you haven't otherwise saved or deleted. To view the contents of a folder, highlight it and press enter. You may also create, delete, and rename folders.

8. Quitting Pine

You can quit Pine by typing Q from the Main menu or the Mail Index. This doesn't work if you are in the process of typing a message.

You must first send (or cancel) the message which will return you to your previous menu. Then type Q to quit. From other menus, type M to return to the Main Menu, then type Q.
