Norton Anti-Virus: Scanning for Viruses Manually and Automatically on Windows®

The Norton AntiVirus LiveUpdate feature is quite user friendly. It is designed to automatically use your existing internet connection to download virus definitions from Symantec's server. LiveUpdate may either be run manually or configured to run automatically at defined intervals.

NOTE: We recommend you run LiveUpdate weekly or when a new virus is found.


Before you Begin ...
... You must ...
  1. ... have Norton Anti-Virus Corporate Edition Downloaded and Installed on your computer
  2. ... be connected to the Internet
  3. ... have run LiveUpdate and have the latest virus definitions installed (LiveUpdate for Windows)

Running A Virus Scan Manually on Entire Hard Drive

1. Open NAV and run Live Update as necessary.

2. Select Scan from the left-hand pane.

3. Select Scan Computer, in the right pane.

4. Place a check in the box next to My Computer and click Scan to scan all drives.

Running A Virus Scan Manually Specific Files and Folders

1. Follow steps 1 - 3 from above, but this time, locate the file or folder you would like to scan by choosing the appropriate location in the right-hand pane by clicking the plus signs that expand the files and folders listing.

2. If you would like to scan a folder, click the box next to it to place a check in it and click Scan.

If you would instead like to scan just an individual file, click the plus sign next to the folder and place a check next to the file and click Scan.

... Or ... Place a check in the box next to the name of the file and click Scan

3. Click "scan" to scan the single folder or file for viruses.


Scheduling Virus Scans

1. Open NAV and run Live Update as necessary.

2. Select Scheduled Scans and New Scheduled Scan from the left-hand pane. Name your scan in the Name field and click Next

3. Choose how often you would like the scan to run and click Next

Specify the frequency of your scan and click Next

4. You will be presented with a file browsing window where you can choose to scan all drives or a select few files and/or folders. Click Save and you will be all set!
