Step 2/5: Updating Your Computer's Operating System (OS) Manually & Automatically

A computer's OS can be updated manually and automatically. This document will walk you through updating your computer's operating system, whether it is Mac OS X or Windows 2000/XP.

Let us begin.


1.0 Updating Windows 2000/XP Manually

1.1 Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and follow directions.

NOTE 1: We highly recommend you install Critical Updates, patches and service packs as necessary. Other updates (Windows, Drivers, etc) are left to your discretion.

NOTE 2: You must use Internet Explorer to run Windows Update. Other browsers will not work.

 

2.0 Updating Windows 2000/XP Automatically

2.1 Windows 2000: Click Start > Settings > Control Panel > Automatic Updates

OR

Windows XP: Right Click My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates

2.2 Here, check "Keep my computer up to date ... ", check "Automatically download updates ... " and select a preferred day and time for updates.

Here, I chose to update my computer Every Tuesday at 10:00 AM.

Step 3: Install Anti Virus Software

3.0 Updating Mac OS X Manually & Automatically

3.1 Click the blue Apple Icon In the top left corner of your screen and go to System Preferences.

3.2 Click Software Update > Check Now to check for updates. Follow directions to install updates, if necessary.

3.3 To check for updates Automatically, place a check next to Automatically Check for updates .... We recommend you check for updates at least once a week.

Step 3: Install Anti-Virus Software
