1. What is Acad?
Acad is the Academic UNIX machine for The George Washington University. You do not need access to Acad to check your email. Email is on a separate system. The most common uses for Acad are to host personal web pages (not departmental/organizational pages), using PINE for email, and writing programs in languages such as UNIX shell script, Perl, C, and C++.

2. Who can get an Acad account?
Any current student, staff or faculty member can get an Acad account. GW Alumni, Departments and Student Organizations are not eligible for accounts on Acad. As a result, students, staff and faculty who wish to maintain a copy of their site should archive it locally before transitioning to an alumni-only role. (After the transition, alumni-only roles no longer have access to create or update Acad sites, and all site contents are deleted.)

3. How do I get an Acad UNIX account?
Point your browser to our account center and follow the links for the type of Acad UNIX account you qualify for. You will be required to login using your NetID and your password, and your Acad account will be created within 1-2 hours. We will email you at your email account with instructions.

4. How do I access my Acad UNIX account?
Acad access is through Secure Shell (SSH). Telnet and FTP access are not available on Acad as these technologies are not secure.

5. How many minutes is the timeout set to?
20 minutes. You will be logged out automatically after 20 minutes of UNIX shell activity.

Return to ^Top^

6. How many concurrent Acad logins can I have?
Concurrent logins are set to 10.

7. What are the uses of an Acad UNIX account?
The Acad UNIX account may be used for accessing a UNIX shell, checking email using PINE, writing shell scripts, compiling programs in C/C++, etc, and publishing your web pages. Please see the online manuals for details on setting up web pages on Acad.

8. How much disk space do I get with my Acad UNIX account?
All users receive 100 Megabytes of disk space.

Return to ^Top^

9. How do I check my disk usage?
Log into your Acad account via SSH, and type gwquota. You may also use the du command to view your disk usage:
		cd
		du -sk
will return a number that is your disk usage in Kilo Bytes.

10. What causes me to exceed my disk quota?
Exceeding your disk quota means that you are using all of (or more than) the disk space that you are allowed on the system. This is usually caused by having large files in your account. Remember: You only have 100 Megabytes of disk space. If you have several large graphics as part of a web page, or have received large attachments as part of email messages that you saved on Acad, this can cause you to run up against your quota. Deleting these files should help.

11. How do I tell if I am over my quota?
You will not be able to upload (FTP) files to your account, create new files, modify existing files or save attachments out of PINE to Acad.

Return to ^Top^

12. How do I lower my disk usage?
You can lower your disk usage by deleting unwanted files and/or email messages/folders.

Return to ^Top^

13. Are my email and Acad passwords the same?
Yes. Acad authenticates with your NetID and password. Your username and password for Acad are the same as your username and password for the mail system.

Return to ^Top^

14. I forgot my Acad UNIX password. What do I do?
Your username and password on Acad are the same as your username and password for our email. If you have lost or forgotten your username and/or password, please see the Account Center for more information.

15. How do I change my Acad UNIX password?
Because Acad and email use the same username and password, you can change your password in the Account Management Tool. This will change your password for both systems. It is not possible to have separate passwords for each system.

NOTE: You cannot change your Acad/NetID password by using the UNIX passwd command.

16. How do I check a department/organization email on Acad using PINE?
To check a department/organization email account on Acad using Pine, you will need to set up a group Pine profile for each account you wish to check. Type gpine at the Acad prompt to get started.

Return to ^Top^

17. What is GPine?
GPine sands for Group PINE. This is a utility that allows you to set up your single user account on Acad to access multiple accounts on the email system (usually departmental/student organization accounts). To access GPine, just type gpine at the Acad UNIX prompt and press enter. If you are using GPine for the first time, you will have to add accounts to it before you can use them. Select the [A]dd option from the menu and follow the instructions to add an account. After the first account is added, you can [A]dd more accounts, delete already added accounts, or enter the number of the account you would like to use.

18. Where did my mail folders go? Why do I see a folder called mail?
If you never had a GWIS2 account, please ignore this, other wise, read on: On GWIS2 (old mail system), Pine was configured to show you only the folders inside the mail folder in your email account. On Acad, you now start out up one level farther than you used to. Your old mail folders are still there, they are inside the mail/ folder that you see in your PINE FOLDER LIST.
