In order to set up your Acad account (not email account) for web access, you will need to create a directory called public_html and set the proper permissions.

Follow the following 3 easy steps to create setup your Acad account for web pages:

1. SSH and log into your Acad account. The host name for Acad is acad.gwu.edu. Here are instructions for Mac OS & Windows NT/2000/XP.

  1. At the UNIX prompt, type the following command, and press enter/return:
  2. fix_html

Follow the directions that appear on your screen. (A screenshot of these directions appears below.) This command will create a public_html directory on your Acad account (skipped if the directory exists), and set the permissions of the files therein.
After this, your account will be all set to go for web page publishing.
  1. Now, when you create or upload your web page, be sure to have a file named index.html.
  2. This will be the page you want your visitors to see when they first arrive at your main page. Without index.html, your visitors will see "Forbidden Your client is not allowed to access the requested object."

4. To view your web page, point your browser to: http://home.gwu.edu/~username.

Please note that http://acad.gwu.edu/~username will not work.

NOTE: Home pages on Acad are for personal accounts. If you are part of a student organization or a department, your web pages should be on the GW's main web server, WWW (host name: www.gwu.edu). Please see the Account Center for a WWW account application.
